Your Intuition Is Not Woo: Why Women Need to Start Listening to Themselves Again
For so long, I believed being good meant putting other people's needs above my own. From a young age, I was praised for being agreeable, accommodating, and selfless. I prioritized being polite over being authentic. I didn’t even realize how deeply I had internalized the message that my needs, voice, and truth should come second to keeping the peace.
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Many of the women I work with share the same pattern. For generations, women have been taught to prioritize others' comfort, even at the expense of their well-being.
Where People-Pleasing Comes From
People-pleasing is a survival strategy passed down through generations of women expected to be silent and self-sacrificing. Their safety and social acceptance depended on it.
Even though women’s status has improved over the years, many of us still carry the deeply ingrained habits of second-guessing our instincts, suppressing our wisdom, and believing we need someone else to tell us what is true. As a result, we’ve become disconnected from our inner voice, leaving us unsure, exhausted, and out of alignment with who we are.
Learning to Listen Again
I spent years trying to be perfect. I’m the oldest daughter and was a high achiever growing up (who are we kidding, I’m still a high achiever). I played the role of a responsible, polite, mature, and sweet person. I wanted to be seen as a “good girl” to cement my worth. However, behind the polished surface, I was a woman who quieted my inner voice to meet the needs of everyone else. I carried a lot of unspoken pressure.
Over time, I began to notice how often my intuition spoke and how, almost just as often, I ignored it. I realized I was living according to external expectations rather than being true to myself. Learning to trust my intuition again didn’t happen overnight. It took practice, compassion, and the willingness to slow down to make it easier. I had to make myself a priority and discover who I wanted to be and what would bring me happiness.
It’s easy to confuse intuition with anxiety or fear. The difference is in how you feel. Physically. Fear tends to be more intense, and it often feels like something is dangerous and likely to cause pain. Intuition is typically more quiet, calm, and grounded, even when it's pushing you toward something unknown. Learning to distinguish the two has allowed me to respond with clarity instead of a reaction. It's been life-changing for me and one of the most empowering things I teach.
Consequences of Overlooking Your Intuition
When you disconnect from your intuition, several consequences arise. Listening to your body is important. When we consistently disregard our intuition, it can lead to burnout, feelings of being stuck, or a sense of emptiness. We lose our purpose even if our lives appear successful from the outside.
Ignoring our intuition leads to allowing people to stay in our lives who shouldn’t be there, pursuing career paths that are soul-depleting, and suppressing our emotions to the detriment of our physical health and well-being.
When you suppress your truth to meet society's expectations, you're at risk of living a life that isn’t truly yours. Intuition brings you back into alignment with your soul.
Why Trusting Your Intuition is Important
Reconnecting with your intuition allows you to navigate the world with a more profound sense of clarity, rootedness, and self-respect. When you listen to your intuition, you don’t have to rely on others for your truth. It now lives from within, and you trust yourself in ways you never thought possible.
Confidence and Empowerment
Trusting your intuition creates quiet confidence. When you no longer look to others to tell you what to do or how to be, you begin to trust yourself. You make choices about what feels right for you and create confidence rooted in truth. When women trust their judgment and act upon their own beliefs, they establish a sense of empowerment. You begin to speak up and express your opinion, you rest when you need it, and you honor your needs without guilt. Build confidence by choosing yourself again and again.
Emotional and Mental Well-Being
Listening to your intuition is a fundamental form of self-care, guiding you when to pause, breathe, cancel plans, nourish your body, or engage in a challenging conversation. It's essential to recognize and trust the whispers of your intuition before they become a scream. Burnout, resentment, anxiety, and overwhelm are preventable if you act on your intuition early.
Listening to your actual needs and desires, and responding with care, allows us to navigate life more gently and with less chaos. It becomes easier over time to sync with your natural rhythm. You begin to tend to yourself in small ways every day, and as a result, you have more fulfilling relationships, a more satisfying career, and a happier lifestyle.
Fulfillment and Joy
Following your intuition allows you to create a life that aligns with what is true for you. When you stop chasing validation from others, your life begins to feel more meaningful and not just productive. Focusing on your wants and needs allows you to feel more connected to your purpose. It's important to find joy and satisfaction in your choices. When you trust your intuition, your purpose becomes less about proving your worth and more about living.
